Cori Cartoon #1

Cori and I went to see Robots the Friday that it opened. She offered to treat because she had a gift certificate left over from Christmas. We get up to the counter and ask for our tickets and then she offers the guy working there a piece of paper - what looks like a movie ticket - I could see the words 'gift certificate' printed on it. The guy takes it, looks at it quizically, turns it over a couple of times and then before he can ask his question Cori says something like, "that's a gift certificate, right - isn't there any money left on it?" or something. The guy proceeds to explain, as I stand to the side and look around to avoid being a part of the embarrassment, that what she has is just the receipt from a gift card - y'know how the receipts from movie tickets now (when you use a credit card or whatever) are simply a ticket with other info printed on them - and he steps over to another register to grab an actual gift card and explains that this is what a gift card looks like. Cori does her awkward-arms-folding-into-her-chest-I'm-embarrassed move and says she must have used the gift card and forgotten. She pays for the movie. The movie rocks. For days afterward I continue to repeat "I've got this gift certificate" in my Cori-voice. Eventually I draw this cartoon panel to commemorate the embarrassment.

I keep forgetting to mention this - I've done the cover design and illustrations for a young adults/teen book that's coming out in April titled, "100 Things Guys Need to Know" from Free Spirit Publishing. It was featured on the cover of last week's (4/7/05) Publisher's Weekly. You can read more about it here.
